Baratza – Vario W+ Automatic Grinder – White

The Baratza Vario W+ white is an automatic coffee grinder designed for home use, combining precise weighing with a wide range of grind sizes. The Baratza Vario W+ white suits filter coffee and espresso alike.

At the heart of the grinder is a pair of 54 mm steel burrs, grinding anywhere between 230 and 1150 microns. This means the same machine can handle both a tight espresso and an open pour over. The burrs are designed to keep fines to a minimum, so the bright flavours of the coffee come through in the cup without harshness.

One of the best features of the Baratza Vario W+ white is its built-in scale. On the digital control panel you choose the dose you want to the nearest 0.1 gram. When you press the start button, the grinder grinds exactly the right amount and stops by itself. This makes your coffee doses far more repeatable.

The grind size is adjusted in two stages. The macro adjuster offers ten clear main steps from coarse to fine. Each main step is then divided into 22 micro steps. That gives 220 settings in all, so finding the right extraction is easy, whether you are brewing with an AeroPress or a moka pot.

A powerful DC motor turns the burrs slowly and quietly. The low speed keeps the coffee cool as it is ground, so the aromatic compounds are better preserved. The grinder can handle long grinding sessions too, as the overheating protection resets automatically.

The hopper holds about 250 grams of coffee beans. A handy shut-off mechanism stops the beans from spilling out when you remove the hopper, so switching beans is a tidy job. Very little ground coffee is retained inside the grinder, which helps keep your beans fresh. A cleaning tool and calibration tool come with the grinder, so you can service it at home without any special know-how.

In practice, the Baratza Vario W+ white produces a cup with an even, clear flavour. In filter coffee this shows as a clean, bright result with no muddiness. With espresso, the scale makes sure your dose is the same from one day to the next.
