The Comandante C40 MK4 is a hand grinder that many consider the best in the world. The Lab Series Nitro Blade version takes it a step further. The Stone Washed finish gives it a subdued silver tone that stands out for the right reasons, without unnecessary showiness.
The heart of the grinder is the Nitro Blade burr. It is made from Nitro Rex steel, which contains more than 17 percent chromium along with carefully measured amounts of vanadium and molybdenum. The result is a hard, corrosion-resistant and completely taste-neutral material that needs no coating. In particular, this means the burr stays exactly as it was made: even, durable and without altering the taste of the coffee.
The Lab Series was born of a wish to offer more freedom to explore flavour. Founder Bernd Braune developed the Nitro Blade burr for more than a decade before the first C40 was released in 2015. He wanted a hand grinder capable of EK43-level performance in a compact size. He also wanted grinding to feel good in the hand and to produce a clean, even particle distribution. This C40 MK4 is the result.
The housing is carefully thought through as well. QTP technopolymer looks and feels like ceramic, but is reinforced with the strength of a composite material. It is food-safe, water-resistant and quietly stylish. Plastic here does not mean a cheaper option, but a deliberately chosen premium material.
The Comandante C40 MK4 suits every brewing method. Its grind settings work just as well for espresso as for pour over or immersion brewing. So with one grinder you can try the whole range of brewing methods without compromise. The settings also stay precise and repeatable, as the mechanism is built to withstand daily use for years.
The box includes a clear polymer bean jar and a dark glass bean jar, each holding 40 grams of beans. The glass bean jar is a particularly practical extra: it is odourless, easy to clean and suits both storage and brewing. You also get a crank with an oak knob, a merino wool mat and a Comandante wristband.
The C40 MK4 is the first choice for people who are truly into coffee. That is why you will find it both in the hands of home brewers and on competition tables around the world. If you want one grinder you can rely on year after year, this is it. Explore our other coffee brewing equipment or see more hand grinders.
