ABOUT THE MAKER
When we talk about speciality coffee, attention often goes first to the roastery or the coffee farm, but here at Haimoo Roastery we know that the quality of an extraction depends on every link in the chain. When it comes to equipment, the maker takes centre stage. The story of Japan's Hario began in Tokyo in 1921. Originally known as the ”King of Glass”, the company made high-quality, heat-resistant glass for scientific laboratories.
That laboratory-grade precision and research are still deep in Hario's DNA. When the speciality coffee industry began to demand ever clearer flavour profiles and better control over extraction, Hario answered the call. The Meteor series was developed from the ground up purely for the needs of modern craft coffee, and it deservedly won the prestigious Specialty Coffee Association of Japan (SCAJ) New Product innovation award. It isn't just paper, but a showcase of science and engineering that helps us bring the potential of the coffees we roast into every cup.
ABOUT THE MATERIAL
The biggest difference between the Meteor and traditional filter papers is found under the microscope. The Meteor isn't plain cellulose but a high-tech hybrid material. It's made from a carefully optimised blend of pure paper cellulose, abaca fibre and PLA (polylactide).
Why a blend like this? Abaca, or Manila hemp, is an extremely strong, highly permeable and fast-renewing natural fibre. Combine it with PLA – a completely safe, plant-based and biodegradable bioplastic – and you get a material that doesn't lose its structure under hot water. PLA helps keep the filter paper's microscopic pores open throughout the extraction. On top of that, oxygen bleaching ensures this top-grade material is completely neutral in taste from the very first drop, leaving no cardboard taste in your drink.
DESIGN AND FLOW
By far the most important feature of this size 02 Meteor paper is its speed. The Meteor lets water through up to three times faster than Hario's standard V60 paper.
Modern light-roast speciality coffee – a high-grown Ethiopian or Kenyan, say – is dense, and grinding it always produces microscopic coffee dust (”fines”). With ordinary papers this dust clogs the pores of the paper, so the water stalls in the dripper, the extraction slows to a crawl and the coffee easily turns bitter. The Meteor paper's innovative structure and abaca fibre prevent clogging. It draws water through lightning fast and evenly right to the final seconds of the extraction, keeping the flow rate completely in your control, not the paper's.
IN THE CUP
Because the Meteor's flow rate is in a class of its own, it opens up entirely new possibilities for your recipes. Since the water doesn't slow down, you can confidently grind your coffee much finer than you're used to with the V60.
A finer grind means a larger contact area between water and coffee, which in turn raises the extraction effectively (higher extraction). When we use Meteor papers on Haimoo's tasting table, we notice the difference immediately. The cup has more sweetness, more of the origin's most delicate notes and exceptional clarity – but thanks to the fast flow, none of the bitterness that comes with over-extraction. It brings the coffee's floral, berry and fruity notes forward at their purest. The compact pack of 50 means you always have fresh paper, protected from moisture, ready for the most important moment of the morning.
